Housebreaking Small Dogs

February 26th, 2011 Tony

In effect, housebreaking small dogs is not too different to housebreaking dogs of all sizes. The only difference is small dogs do tend to need to go to the toilet more often because they have smaller bladders than larger dogs.

Crate training can be very effective in teaching your dog. This is because is has a set place to go to sleep all the time and doesn’t sleep in various places. The crate needs to be large enough so your dog can turn round but not too big. This is because a dog will never soil where it sleeps and if it sleeps in the same place it won’t go there.

Praising your dog is a major way of getting them to understand that they have done something right. So when they go to the toilet outside, praise them every time. They will get used to this and know to go outside all the time.

Never get angry or hit your dog if it goes inside the house, they simply won’t understand this and it’s only cruel to them. Instead, praise them when they do something right, use a crate and have them go in the same place outside. Dogs are creatures of habit and they’ll soon get used to it.
